Golf Ball Compression Chart: What Your Swing Speed Can Actually Load
Under about 95 mph of driver speed, a ball rated 70 or lower will feel and behave correctly; over 105 mph, look at 90 and above. Compression governs feel and how the ball loads, not distance, which is decided by cover and construction. The chart below lists the major models with compression, cover, spin profile, conforming status and exposure to the 2028 and 2030 rollback.

If your driver swing speed is under about 95 mph, a ball rated 70 compression or lower will load properly and feel right. Over about 105 mph, you want 90 or above, or the ball will feel mushy off a wedge and spin more than you want off the driver.
What compression does not do is decide how far the ball goes. That argument was settled by multi-layer construction a long time ago, and modern low-compression balls do not lose meaningful distance at recreational speeds. Compression governs feel, the sensation of loading, and to some extent iron spin. Cover material and layer count govern the thing that actually costs you strokes, which is how much the ball checks from 40 yards.
Two working caveats before the chart. Compression numbers vary by test rig and by model year, sometimes by ten points for the same ball, so read them as bands rather than as decimals. And every ball listed below is on the List of Conforming Golf Balls today. The interesting column is the last one.
What compression actually measures
A compression rating is how much a ball deforms under a fixed load. Higher number, less deformation, firmer ball. That is the whole definition, and it is measured on a bench with a press rather than by hitting anything.
The old ATTI scale that gave us 80, 90 and 100 compression balls was calibrated differently to the digital rigs used now, which is why archive numbers and current numbers do not line up. Two publications testing the same ball today will often report figures eight or ten points apart because their rigs load at different rates.
So the useful question is never 'what is this ball's compression'. It is 'is this ball firmer or softer than the one I played last season, and by roughly how much'. Compare within a single source, not across sources.

Rollback exposure is a judgement, not a published figure, so it is worth stating how it is derived. High means the model's entire design brief is distance at the top of the speed range under the current Overall Distance Standard test conditions, which makes re-engineering before 2028 near-certain. Medium means the model is optimised around 100 mph and will likely see minor changes. Low means the ball's measured distance is nowhere near the standard at any test speed and nothing about the revision touches it.
None of these balls is at risk of becoming illegal in your hands. Manufacturers will submit revised versions; the old ones will remain on the List for general play until January 2030 and are then superseded rather than banned overnight. What changes is what is on the shelf.

A 40-compression ball will not cost a 90 mph golfer meaningful distance. The idea that slower swings 'cannot compress' a firm ball and therefore lose yards is largely a hangover from the wound-ball era, when core construction really did behave that way.
What a 40-compression ionomer ball does cost you is the shot from 45 yards that lands, takes one hop and stops. That ball has almost no urethane-cover spin and it will release six or eight yards past where you landed it, every time.
So the honest framing is not soft versus firm. It is ionomer versus urethane, and compression is largely a side effect of which one the manufacturer chose. If you break 95 regularly and you play courses with any greenside protection, the urethane cover is the spec worth paying for. If you shoot 110 and lose four balls a round, it is not, and a two-piece ionomer ball at a third of the price is genuinely the right choice.
The middle case is the awkward one. A 20-handicapper at 88 mph who chips well is better served by a soft urethane three-piece than by anything else on the shelf, and that category barely existed ten years ago.
The 40-yard shot decides your ball
Every serious ball test comes down to one shot, and it is not a drive. Take six balls, find a green with some run-off, and hit ten pitches of about 40 yards with each.
What you are looking for is the second bounce. A tour urethane ball will take a long first hop and then check hard. An ionomer ball will take a shorter first hop and then keep going. The difference on a firm green is regularly eight to twelve yards of total roll-out, which is the difference between a six-foot putt and a chip back.
Driver distance between two balls in the same compression band is usually inside three yards, which is inside your own shot-to-shot variation. You cannot feel three yards. You can feel ten yards of roll-out, on every single pitch shot, for a whole season.
Conforming status and the rollback
All twenty-two models above sit on the List of Conforming Golf Balls today, and Rule 4.2a requires a conforming ball in every round played under the Rules. Where a committee adopts Model Local Rule G-6, the ball must additionally appear on the published List, model name and marking matching.
The Overall Distance Standard itself is not changing. The 317-yard limit and its 3-yard tolerance stay. What changes is the test the ball has to pass.

Practical advice for a club golfer: change nothing. Buy the ball that suits your speed and your short game, play it out, and revisit this in 2029. Stockpiling current-spec balls ahead of 2030 is a strategy for people who have run the numbers on 5 yards and decided it is worth a garage full of sleeves.
Running a ball test that means something
- Test three balls at most, not eight. Beyond three you cannot hold the comparison in your head.
- Use your own course on a normal day, not a launch monitor bay. Greenside behaviour is the variable and no bay reproduces it.
- Play nine holes with one ball and nine with another rather than alternating shots, because alternating destroys your feel for the putter.
- Judge putting feel separately and last. It is real, it matters, and it is completely swamped if you try to assess it at the same time as pitching.
- Ignore driver distance entirely unless the two balls are more than two compression bands apart.
- Buy a dozen of the winner and stop testing. Ball-hopping costs more strokes than any ball choice.
