Rangefinder or GPS? A Shot-by-Shot Decision Tree for Golf Distances

Laser for a flag you can see, GPS for everything you cannot. The laser gives one exact number to a visible target; GPS gives front, middle, back and hazard carries without line of sight. In a counting round a third question decides it: which device can prove its slope function is off?

Laser to a flag you can see. GPS for everything you cannot: blind approaches, hazard carries, layup numbers, the front edge on a green tucked behind a bunker.

That answer holds for about 80% of shots and it is why so many good players carry both. What almost nobody publishes is the third axis, which only appears in rounds that count: whether the device can demonstrate to a committee that its elevation-adjustment function is switched off.

The Rules position is identical for both. Rule 4.3a(1) allows a device to measure distance and forbids using it to gauge elevation change. Where a committee adopts Model Local Rule G-5, neither device may be used at all. The difference is entirely in whether the disabled state is visible from outside the housing, and lasers win that comparison because several of them built it into the hardware.

  1. The axis nobody publishes

    A laser with an external slope switch tells the story of its own legality. Somebody can look at it and know. A GPS watch showing an elevation-adjusted number does not: the setting lives three menus deep, and the only evidence that it is off is your word.

    That does not make GPS illegal. It makes it unprovable, which is a different and much smaller problem, but a real one in a scratch qualifier or a county event.

    The practical consequence is a split most competitive golfers arrive at on their own after a couple of seasons. Laser as the primary in counting rounds. GPS as the primary in social golf, where the elevation adjustment is genuinely useful and nobody cares.

  2. The decision tree

    Work out which two or three rows describe most of your golf, then buy the device that wins those rows rather than the one that wins on features.

    Row five is the one that decides more purchases than any other. If you play parkland golf with tree-lined approaches, a laser will fail you on perhaps two shots a round, and those two shots are why the second device exists.

    The two rows that decide it for most golfers are blind shots and time to a number. Everything else is close enough to be a preference.

    GPS accuracy deserves a note. Consumer GPS positioning is good to a few yards in the open, and every golf unit is quoting a distance from your position to a surveyed point on a mapped green. The error is in your position, not the map, which is why standing still for two seconds before reading improves the number noticeably.

    Laser accuracy has no such caveat and no such error, provided you hit the target you meant to hit. That proviso does a lot of work, and it is the whole argument for pin-seek behaviour.

  4. Where the laser genuinely wins

    Any shot where the exact number matters more than the approximate one. Short irons and wedges, where five yards is the difference between a putt and a bunker shot. Recovery shots, where you need the distance to a gap in a tree line and no map has ever recorded that gap. Anything on an unfamiliar course, where a GPS map may be several years out of date and a green may have been rebuilt.

    There is a second, quieter benefit. A laser measures the target you point at, which forces you to decide what you are aiming at before you pull a club. That decision-making discipline is worth something on its own.

  5. Where GPS genuinely wins

    Links golf, obviously, where half the approaches are blind and the flag disappears behind a dune. Any course that plays from raised tees onto hidden fairways. Any round where pace of play is the constraint rather than precision.

    The unglamorous case is the strongest one, though: a GPS unit gives you front and back yardages continuously, without any action. On a green 38 yards deep with the flag at the back, the middle number is 19 yards wrong, and a laser to the flag is the only way to fix that. On a green 22 yards deep, the middle number is close enough and you saved yourself a stop.

    Battery is the constraint people underestimate. A watch running full GPS mapping for 36 holes on a society day will be uncomfortable. A handheld will not.

  6. Hybrids and phone apps

    Combined laser and GPS units exist and they solve the carrying problem neatly: laser to the flag, mapped overlay for everything behind it. They cost more, weigh more, and inherit the GPS unit's problem, which is that the slope setting is buried in software and invisible from outside.

    Phone apps are the cheapest way to get a golf GPS and the worst way to get a distance. Nothing wrong with the mapping. The problem is the ritual: pull it out, wake the screen, wait, read, put it away, repeat 30 times. The time cost is real and it makes you skip readings on exactly the shots where you should take one.

    For a counting round, treat any phone app as Grade C. It is legal for distance and it can prove nothing about its own settings.

  7. Running both without slowing anybody down

    • GPS gives you the number while you walk to the ball. Front, middle, back, and any carry that matters. No stopping.
    • Laser confirms the flag only when the GPS middle number and the flag position disagree by more than about eight yards, which on most greens means a front or back pin.
    • One reading, one club decision. Do not laser the flag, then the bunker, then the back edge, then the flag again. That is where the pace complaints come from.
    • Set the GPS to its plain-distance mode at the start of any counting round and leave it there for the whole competition, rather than toggling per round.
    • If the two devices disagree by more than ten yards, trust the laser and check that you did not lock a background object.

    For most club golfers, if the choice is genuinely one device, it should be the laser: exact numbers to visible targets cover most of a parkland round, and the hardware slope switch solves the competition problem outright. Links golfers and anyone who plays a lot of blind approaches should reverse that without hesitating.
