Golf Handicap Chart: Index to Course Handicap for Every Slope Rating
Course Handicap is your Handicap Index multiplied by the slope rating divided by 113, plus the course rating minus par, rounded to the nearest whole number. An 18.0 index plays as 18 off a slope of 113, 14 off 85 and 25 off 155. The chart below turns that arithmetic into a lookup, and the tables underneath show how the index was built, which eight of your last twenty rounds count, and what the competition allowance does to the number before you tee off.

Most golfers know their index and stop there. The index is a portable measure of demonstrated ability; it is not a number of shots, and it is not what you get on the card. An 18.0 index is 18 strokes on a course of slope 113, 14 on a flat municipal at 85, and 25 on a heavily bunkered links at 155. Same golfer, same ability, eleven strokes of difference.
Everything below the main chart is about where the index came from and what happens to it between the handicap system and the first tee. The order matters: index, then course handicap, then allowance, then the number that goes on the card.
The conversion chart

Interpolate between rows — an index of 12.4 off slope 125 sits between the 11.0 and 14.0 lines, at 14. The 113 in the formula is not arbitrary. It is the slope rating of a course of standard difficulty for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer, and it is why a course rated at exactly 113 gives you your index back unchanged.
Note how the spread widens as the index goes up. At 2.0 the difference between the easiest and hardest slope on this chart is one stroke. At 30.0 it is eighteen. Slope exists to protect higher-handicap golfers on hard courses, and that is the mechanism doing it.
The bit the chart cannot do: course rating minus par
Since the 2024 revision, the course handicap calculation includes a second term. After the slope conversion you add the course rating minus par, and that term can move the answer by several strokes.
Work an example. A 14.0 index playing a set of tees with slope 135, course rating 73.4 and par 71. The slope conversion gives 14 × 135 ÷ 113 = 16.7. Course rating minus par is 73.4 − 71 = 2.4. Total 19.1, rounded to 19. The chart on its own said 17.
Now the same golfer off the forward tees at that club: slope 121, rating 68.2, par 71. Slope conversion 14 × 121 ÷ 113 = 15.0. Rating minus par is 68.2 − 71 = −2.8. Total 12.2, rounded to 12. Seven strokes of difference between two sets of tees at the same course, and the whole reason the term exists is so that a fourball playing different tees can compete on the same card without anybody doing extra sums.
Almost every club now prints a course handicap table on the card or has a terminal in the hall. Use it. The formula is here so you can check the table, not so you can replace it.
Where the index comes from: the score differential
Every acceptable round you post gets converted into a score differential before it goes anywhere near your index. The formula is 113 divided by the slope rating, multiplied by the adjusted gross score minus the course rating minus the playing conditions calculation. The result carries one decimal place.

Rows three and four are the interesting pair — the 91 on the hard links is a better round than the 84 on the easy municipal, and only the differential shows it. Two things in that table are worth pulling out. The adjusted gross score is not your gross score: individual hole scores are capped at net double bogey, meaning par plus two plus any strokes you receive on that hole, before the round is submitted. A blow-up hole cannot wreck your index.
The playing conditions calculation runs automatically at each course each day, comparing scores actually returned against what was expected. It ranges from −1 to +3. A PCC of +2 says the course played substantially harder than its rating, and it moves everybody's differential in your favour without anybody having to complain about the wind.
Which of your last twenty rounds are doing the work
With a full record, your index is the average of the best eight score differentials from your most recent twenty, and nothing else in the record matters at all. Twelve of your last twenty rounds are, for handicap purposes, invisible.

Below twenty rounds the index is being calculated off a handful of scores with an adjustment bolted on, which is why new indexes move so violently. This is the single most misunderstood part of the system. Posting a bad round does not raise your index directly. It raises it only by pushing an old good round out of the twenty-round window, and if the round leaving the window was worse than the round entering it, a 96 can lower your index.
It also means the fastest legitimate way to move your index is to post more rounds. A record sitting at eleven differentials is using the best three; get it to twenty and it uses the best eight, which almost always produces a slightly higher and considerably more stable number.
Caps, and the exceptional score you did not see coming
Two mechanisms sit on top of the averaging. One stops your index climbing after a bad patch. The other cuts it hard after a round that was better than your record says you can play.

The exceptional score reduction is the one that surprises people, because it does not wait for the averaging to catch up. Shoot a differential ten strokes better than your index and the system takes two strokes off every differential in your record immediately. Your index can drop two full strokes overnight off a single round.
Golfers describe this as a punishment. It is not, quite. It is the system saying that a round that far outside your record is evidence your record is stale, and the correction is deliberately blunt because the alternative is waiting twenty rounds for the truth to emerge.
Allowances: the number on the sheet is not your course handicap
Course handicap is what you are capable of. Playing handicap is what you get in the competition you have entered, and the two are different numbers because different formats need different handicapping to stay fair.

These are the recommended allowances and a Committee is entitled to set something else, in which case the entry sheet is what counts. What makes a score acceptable in the first place
A round has to be played under the Rules of Golf to be an acceptable score. That sentence carries more weight than it looks like it does, and it is where handicapping meets equipment.
Play a qualifier with a driver that breaches an adopted 46-inch local rule, or with a wedge somebody has taken a groove tool to, and you do not have a handicap problem — you have a disqualification under Rule 4.1a and a round that should never have been posted. The same is true of the distance-device rules: using slope compensation in a competition where the Committee has not permitted it is a breach of Rule 4.3a, carrying the general penalty for a first offence and disqualification for a second.
Beyond that, the requirements are unglamorous. At least a defined minimum number of holes has to be played, the course needs a current course rating and slope rating for the tees you used, and the round has to be played in your authorised format with an acceptable method of scoring. Solo rounds are acceptable in many jurisdictions and not in others, and that specific point is set by your national association rather than by the World Handicap System itself. Check yours rather than assuming.
Post every acceptable score, including the bad ones. A record with the bad rounds missing is not a lower handicap, it is a wrong one, and the eight-of-twenty mechanism means the omitted rounds were probably not counting anyway.
