Wedge Gapping Chart: Loft Setups That Close the Yardage Hole Below Pitching Wedge

A strong-lofted set with a 43° pitching wedge and an old 52-56-60 wedge trio leaves a 27-yard hole in the scoring range, and that is a scoring problem, not a fitting preference. The chart below shows four setups side by side with loft, bounce, carry and the resulting gap. The second table covers the variable that reopens the gap over time — groove wear — and clears up which part of it is actually a rules issue.

Aim for gaps of 10 to 14 yards between wedges, and never let one exceed 15. The chart below shows four setups measured against that rule, and one of them fails by a mile.

The failure is common and it is not the golfer's fault. Iron sets have been getting stronger for two decades. A pitching wedge that was 48° in 2004 is 43° in a lot of current game-improvement sets, and nobody at the till mentions that the 52-56-60 combination in the bag was designed to sit under a 48° pitching wedge, not a 43° one. Five degrees of loft is roughly fifteen yards of carry, and it lands squarely in the part of the course where scores get made.

Fix the loft spacing first. Then, separately, deal with the thing that quietly reopens a gap you have already closed: grooves that have stopped gripping.

  1. First, find out what your pitching wedge actually is

    Nobody knows this off the top of their head and the number is not on the club. It is on the manufacturer's spec sheet, usually buried in a table at the bottom of the product page, and it is the single most useful piece of information in this whole exercise.

    Rough guide by category. Traditional and players' irons sit between 45° and 47°. Modern players-distance sets land around 43° to 45°. Game-improvement and distance sets run 41° to 43°, and a handful go lower still.

    While you are there, note the shaft length of the pitching wedge as well. Strong-lofted sets often pair the stronger loft with a longer shaft, which adds a few more yards on top and widens the hole further.

  2. Four setups, one of which is broken

    Carries below are for a golfer whose 7-iron carries 150 yards, hitting full shots on a dry day. Your absolute numbers will differ. The gaps will not, because gaps scale with loft rather than with speed.

    Find the column that matches what is in your bag. Anything showing a gap above 15 yards needs a loft change, not a swing change — the 27-yard hole in column C is the reason golfers end up hitting three-quarter wedges they never practise.

    Column D is the honest answer for a strong-lofted set and it costs a club. Five wedges below the 9-iron leaves nine slots for everything else, and for most golfers that means dropping a long iron or a fairway wood. That is usually the right trade, because the yardages in this table come up far more often than a 230-yard second shot.

    The 47, 51, 55 and 59 configuration in column D is not a stock lineup. You get there by having a 48° bent one degree strong, a 52° bent one strong, a 56° bent one strong and a 60° bent one strong, which any competent workshop does in twenty minutes. Bending is legal — a club just has to conform after the alteration, and a bench bend to loft and lie does not change that.

    One consequence to know before you ask for it: bending a wedge one degree stronger takes one degree off the effective bounce. Four wedges bent strong is four wedges with less bounce than the stamp says, and if you play soft turf that is a real change in how they behave out of a wet lie.

  3. Bounce, and why the same loft behaves differently in different soil

    Bounce is the angle between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole. It decides whether the club digs or skids, and it is the reason two 56° wedges can feel like different clubs entirely.

    Match bounce to the ground you actually play on, then to your attack angle — a steep digger on soft turf wants high bounce even if the yardage chart says otherwise.
  4. Grooves: the variable that reopens the gap

    Close your gaps properly and they stay closed for a season or two. Then the most-used wedge starts releasing further than it did, and the yardages you wrote down stop being true.

    The published groove specification gives you the numbers. Maximum width 0.035 in (0.9 mm), maximum depth 0.020 in (0.508 mm), spacing at least three times the groove width, and a minimum effective edge radius of 0.010 in. The cross-sectional area limit sits at 0.0030 in² per inch. For clubs of 25° loft and above — which is every wedge and most short irons — the tighter 2010 specification applies.

    The shape of the decline is the point, not the absolute numbers — measure your own on a monitor if you want a baseline. Note that only the bottom row is a rules problem.

    Spin loss from wear is far less dramatic off a dry fairway lie than golfers expect and far worse than they expect out of wet rough. Grooves exist to channel water and grass away from the contact patch. On a dry ball from a clean lie the friction is mostly coming from the face finish and the cover, so a tired wedge still spins acceptably. Put grass and moisture between face and ball and a worn wedge produces a flier that lands hot and runs out the back.

    That is why the practical test is not how the wedge looks. It is whether your 60-yard shot from damp rough still stops.

  5. The groove rule people get wrong

    Worn grooves do not make a wedge non-conforming. This gets stated the other way round constantly and it is wrong. A club that conformed when it was made carries on conforming as it wears through normal use, and there is no round count at which it expires.

    Sharpening is where it changes. Run an aftermarket groove tool down the face and you are altering edge radius and, quite possibly, depth. Both are specified limits. A wedge that has been sharpened can very easily fall outside the 0.010 in minimum effective edge radius, and at that point it is a non-conforming club. Making a stroke with it is disqualification under Rule 4.1a.

    There is a second, less obvious version of the same mistake: buying a used wedge that somebody else has sharpened. You cannot see it from a photograph and the seller may not know. If a wedge on the second-hand market has grooves that look sharper than the wear on the rest of the face suggests they should, that is the tell.

    Cleaning is fine. A brass brush, warm water and a tee to dig the mud out of the grooves is maintenance, not alteration, and it will restore more spin than most golfers assume was lost to wear in the first place.

  6. Setting your gaps on a monitor in twenty minutes

    Take every club from 9-iron down. Hit eight full shots with each, ignore the two worst, and record the median carry rather than the average — one thin one skews an average badly and medians do not care.

    Write the medians in a column and subtract. Any gap over 15 yards needs a wedge or a bend. Any gap under 8 yards means you are carrying a club you do not need, and that slot is better spent elsewhere.

    Do it with the ball you play, not range rock. Range balls spin less and carry differently, and the whole exercise is about carry numbers you can trust on the course. Most club fitters will let you use your own balls for a gapping session and the ones who will not are worth avoiding.

    Repeat it once a year, at the same time of year. Gapping drifts as wedges wear and as your speed changes, and a January session compared against a July one tells you about the weather rather than about your bag.

  7. Quick answers

    • Four to six degrees between wedges is the working range. Four degrees suits slower speeds, six suits faster ones, because a faster player gets more yards per degree.
    • If your set pitching wedge is 43° or stronger, you need four wedges below it or you need to accept a hole. There is no third option.
    • A gap wedge and an approach wedge are the same thing with different letters on the sole. What matters is the number, and the number is usually 48 to 52.
    • Bending changes bounce by the same amount in the opposite direction. One degree stronger is one degree less bounce.
    • Groove wear is a performance issue with no rules consequence. Groove sharpening is a rules issue with disqualification attached under Rule 4.1a.
